EU Opens Door to Global Carbon Credits in 2040 Climate Target
The European Commission (EC)’s bold proposal to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels is currently underplay. Latest developments include that up to 3% of this reduction to come from international carbon credits. This blends domestic action with global cooperation. Initially, all emission cuts had to happen in-house. However, the EU will now permit this limited share of high-quality international carbon credits. This will begin in 2036. For Indian exporters and sustainability leaders, this opens a pathway to monetizing verified emissions reductions under the EU’s evolving climate frameworks.

Green Climate Fund Approves Record $1.2B Amid Global Funding Cuts
The Green Climate Fund has approved a record $1.225 billion in project allocations, despite the United States pulling $4 billion in pledged funding. At its recent board meeting in Papua New Guinea, the fund endorsed initiatives spanning from desertification mitigation in Mauritania to building green bond markets. In its statement, the fund emphasized its commitment to scaling up climate finance amid rising global demand. These approvals mark a rare bright spot in a tightening climate finance landscape, as international funding faces growing uncertainty with the U.S. withdrawing from several climate efforts and Europe redirecting resources toward defense.

Global Carbon Emissions Must Be Halved Every Five Years, Scientists Warn
In a stark warning to policymakers worldwide, climate scientists have emphasized that global carbon emissions must be cut by 50% every five years starting 2025 to stay within safe planetary limits and avoid irreversible tipping points. While the EU led by example in 2023 with an 8.5% drop in emissions, many countries and corporations are falling behind. Alarmingly, over 40% of businesses have abandoned their climate targets, underscoring the urgent need for decisive, long-term action to accelerate decarbonization across sectors.
