Around the World: Trends Shaping Climate & Business
EU Agrees to 90% Carbon Cut by 2040 Amid Controversy
The European Union has set a target to slash carbon emissions by 90% by 2040, a move criticized as a weakening of its previous climate goals. Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland opposed the agreement, while compromises allow flexibility to buy international carbon credits and postpone new carbon trading for transport and heating. Environmental groups warn this may effectively outsource emissions reductions to less-developed countries. EU climate ministers finalized the deal after an overnight marathon session, pending approval from the European Parliament. The agreement signals Europe’s commitment to climate action ahead of COP30 in Brazil, balancing emissions cuts with economic and geopolitical realities.

India Sees Steepest Rise in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Ahead of COP30
According to the UN’s latest Emissions Gap Report, India recorded the largest increase in absolute greenhouse gas emissions globally during 2023–24, adding 165 million tonnes. While per capita emissions remain among the lowest for major economies, the surge and the missed NDC submission by the September 30 deadline put India under the global spotlight ahead of COP30 in Brazil. Scientists warn the world is on track for a 2.8°C temperature rise by century’s end, far above the 1.5°C Paris target. Experts urge rapid action, highlighting India’s climate justice challenge: balancing low per-capita emissions with rising total emissions. The report signals a critical need for accelerated climate policies and greater ambition in NDC updates.
